Here at the House, we love shopping, and we love looking good, but we also want to be more conscious about what we buy.  That’s why all Vivid House products are produced with the health of the planet and the folks that live on it in mind.

Only the friendliest Base Products

We shopped around for plain base products in great colours that are fab quality. We found some really good options, but if they weren’t ethically and sustainably sourced then they went straight onto the reject pile.

We’ve ended up with some top quality products that tick all the boxes.

Raw materials

The manufacturer of our base products sources only the best raw materials, grown or produced in ways that don’t harm people, animals or the environment. They only use 100% GOTS certified organic cotton from India and recycled polyester from China, which would otherwise be polluting waste.

The benefits of organic cotton

field of organic cotton

Growing conventional cotton uses roughly 16% of the world's insecticides (by sales) and 5.7% of pesticides (by value)*.  However, no toxic chemicals are used in the growing of organic cotton, which makes it safer for anyone who harvests it and less damaging to the soil.

Here are the stats:

Organic cotton vs. conventional cotton

  • 26% less potential for soil erosion
  • 46% less greenhouse gas emitted
  • 70% less acidification of land and water
  • 91% less surface and groundwater use

The workforce

All the base products we use carry the Fair Wear label.  This means the manufacturer commits to implementing the Fair Wear Code of Labour Practices.

Fair wear logo

Fair Wear's eight labour standards are:

  • Employment is freely chosen
  • There is no discrimination in employment
  • No exploitation of child labour
  • Freedom of association and the right to collective bargaining
  • Payment of a living wage
  • No excessive working hours
  • Safe and healthy working conditions
  • Legally binding employment relationship

Our manufacturer works closely with factories in Bangladesh to ensure workers are treated fairly and in accordance with the law, and that any grievances are properly dealt with.  They continue to improve working conditions and will only work with companies who guarantee a legal minimum wage and fundamental legal requirements such as in-house childcare facilities, maternity leave and medical cover.

Dyeing process

The dyeing process of the fabric is closely monitored to ensure wastewater doesn’t contaminate local water sources.  Each factory is fitted with an Effluent Treatment Plant (ETP) which removes toxic elements from wastewater to ensure it’s safe enough to be discharged back into inland surface water. The treated water is also used for car washing and gardening at the factories.

The Natural Raw product that features our Feeling Amazing design is completely free from dyes, which means that each garment reflects the true colour of the cotton plant itself. The fabric is textured with tiny specks of the original plant, including seed particles, which adds to its beauty and authenticity. Because no dyes are involved, there are even fewer chemicals used and up to 920% less water and energy.

The printed design

Once we receive the base product our designs are printed onto it with the friendliest inks we could find, by a UK printer, paying the living wage to their workers.
